Privacy Policy
Tracely turns GPX routes into 3D terrain flyover videos, in the iPhone app and in the web app. The iPhone app does everything on your device. The web app does the same for guests; only if you sign in does it keep your saved routes on our server (see "Tracely on the web").
What stays on your device
In the iPhone app, GPX files you open, routes, photos you attach and exported videos are processed locally and are not uploaded to us. The iPhone app has no accounts.
Map tiles (our tile server and Mapbox)
To draw terrain and satellite imagery the app requests map tiles for the area of your route from our own tile server (tracely-backend.yoclaw.org), which relays them to Mapbox and caches them. These requests contain tile coordinates and your device IP address, and are subject to Mapbox's privacy policy. We do not use them to identify you or link them to you.
OpenStreetMap / Overpass
To label places along a route, the app sends the bounding box of the route to an Overpass API server (OpenStreetMap data).
Route recording
If you start a recording, the app uses your device's location only while that recording is running (including when the screen is locked, shown by the blue location indicator), and stops as soon as you stop it. The recorded track is stored only on your device and is never uploaded to us. You can export it as a GPX file or delete it at any time from My routes. Showing terrain and place labels for a recorded route sends the same map tile and Overpass requests as for an imported route (described above); the track itself is not sent.
Photos
The app only asks permission to add exported videos to your library; it does not read your photos. Photos you attach to a route are picked with the system picker.
Analytics and crash reports
We use Amplitude and Google Firebase Analytics for usage analytics, and Firebase Crashlytics for crash reports. Analytics counts six things: app opens, route imports, export starts, export results (completed or failed), recording starts, and saved recordings, each tagged with the app name and version. Crashlytics sends a crash report (stack trace, device model, OS version, app version) when the app crashes. Amplitude and Firebase each use a random device identifier to count unique installs. We attach no route content, location, GPX data, user ID or personal identifiers, we do not collect the advertising identifier (IDFA), and we do not use this data for advertising or tracking; ad-personalization is disabled. Data is processed by Amplitude under Amplitude's privacy policy and by Google under Firebase's privacy terms.
Tracely on the web
As a guest, a GPX file you open in the web app is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to us. Terrain and place labels use the same map tile and Overpass requests as the iPhone app (described above).
If you sign in with Apple or Google, we create an account that stores the sign-in provider, your account identifier at that provider and the email address it shares with us (with Apple this can be a private relay address). The routes you save are stored on our server: the GPX file, its name, activity, stats and film settings. We use them only to show your routes in any browser where you sign in. Sign-in uses cookies that keep you signed in; they are not used for anything else. Signing out removes the copy of your routes cached in that browser.
Deleting. Deleting a route removes its GPX file from our server at once; a marker without route content stays for up to 30 days so your other devices learn about the delete. Deleting your account in the web app permanently removes your account, sign-ins and all saved routes from our server.
Web analytics. The website and the web app use Amplitude to count a few events: page and app opens, route imports, demo route opens, sign-ins, saved routes, film exports (with the chosen look and frame) and clicks on the "Open the web app" and App Store buttons, each tagged with the app name and version. The Amplitude identifier lives only in memory for the visit; nothing is stored in your browser for analytics, and we attach no route content, location, GPX data, account or email.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13.
Your choices
Delete the iPhone app to remove all its local data. On the web, delete your account from the account menu, or write to us and we will delete it. Questions: mrtrenchsol@gmail.com.
